No, you're not stupid. The only reason I could guess what the problem was is I've seen it done many times. Many languages would complain about the "redefinition"; Python just quietly does what you tell it and re-binds the name to a new value. That can actually be a very useful feature, but it also lets you shoot yourself in the foot when it's not really what you intended to do.
