Re your question: it looks like you are missing the basket middleware. You need to add 'oscar.apps.basket.middleware.BasketMiddleware' to your 'MIDDLEWARE_CLASSES' to have the basket instance assigned to the request object.
See http://django-oscar.readthedocs.org/en/releases-0.4/getting_started.html#settings for more details on installing Oscar.
