Django migrate generates SQLite3 file filled with junk

Just getting started with django and having an issue with the migrate.py script. It generates a db.SQLite3 file which is filled with a lot of garbage characters. It's in UTF-8 encoding, but looks like this.

I've deleted the file and redone the migrate a few times but it's always like this.

Any help appreciated!
Thanks
