I did a quick google search and found the following package:

https://django-messages.readthedocs.io/en/latest/

All you need to do is create the DRF views for it.

I am trying to create a private messaging system using the Django Rest framework. It doesn't have to be like a live chat, just have an inbox and be able to respond, a simple thing like that.
