I've now got:
os.environ["DJANGO_SETTINGS_MODULE"] = "settings"
That seems to get python mysite.fcgi, to work better, but I now have errors:
WSGIServer: missing FastCGI param REQUEST_METHOD required by WSGI!
WSGIServer: missing FastCGI param SERVER_NAME required by WSGI!
WSGIServer: missing FastCGI param SERVER_PORT required by WSGI!
WSGIServer: missing FastCGI param SERVER_PROTOCOL required by WSGI!
I'm hoping that once I have those resolved so that python mysite.fcgi runs with no errors, then perhaps the website will also work...

Hey Newt,
not sure if this is your problem, but I thinkos.environ["DJANGO_SETTINGS_good luckMODULE"] = "settings.py"
should beos.environ["DJANGO_SETTINGS_MODULE"] = "proj1.settings"
