Hard to say -- I've not used IRC in decades and took me a while to
configure mIRC for Freenode...

Then figure out how to open my router firewall to allow IDENT
requests... (disable IDENT filter AND set up a gaming port forwarding to
my desktop machine -- which I probably should change to non-DHCS IP)

* Connecting to irc.freenode.net (6667)

-sendak.freenode.net- *** Checking Ident

-sendak.freenode.net- *** No Ident response

-sendak.freenode.net- *** Found your hostname

... to finally get some message that I

Cannot join channel (+r) - you need to be identified with services

... and out of curiosity

* Now talking in #python-unregistered
* Topic is 'Welcome to #python-unregistered! You've been put here
because #python requires you to register your nickname with Freenode.
For more information about registering on Freenode, ask #freenode. For
more information about #python,#python-* moderation, #python-ops.'

Off-hand, not a very friendly environment to be sending folk <G>
