Re: Regarding Django job market here in Perth

Calvin cross-posted this to the Perth Django Users Group mailing list (Perth, Western Australia, that is). I responded on that list, but I'm repeating the answer here for the benefit of the django-users archives.

Hi Guys,

Sorry to be bothersome.
Do you guys happen to know any local company (based in Perth) that actually uses Python/Django technology? I have visited all of the major job websites and a few other Django-specific job websites like djangojobs.net and djangogigs.com. But I only find one or two companies that hires Python/Django programmers.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Calvin,

I know of many companies in Perth that use Django. However, my experience has been that most of them don't treat the jobs as "Django" jobs - just as jobs that happen to use Django, which is why you won't find them on djangojobs.net or djangogigs.com.

This reflects the type of work done by the businesses themselves. Most of them aren't web shops in the traditional sense - they're consulting or engineering firms that have a need for a web frontend for various reasons. To them, Django is a means to an end; they're looking for good engineers, and it's expected that good engineers will be able to pick up a good web framework without too much trouble. I have a standing search on Seek that triggers on Python and Django, and it would be an unusual week that I didn't get at least one hit.

Of course, there are a couple of traditional web agencies that use Django occasionally or exclusively - a couple of them are represented at the monthly meetup.

BTW, is it appropriate to ask job-related question in the Users Group?

It's certainly fair game as far as I'm concerned. I'm hesitant to call out specific companies on a mailing list, though, because they're not necessarily hiring. If you come along to the next meetup (it's not posted yet, but it will be on Feb 20), we can ask around the room and see if anyone knows anyone who is hiring.

Yours,
