For interactive web pages, you are (almost) necessarily talking about javascript.

Given your background and what you're most likely to be doing next, I would suggest looking at D3.js - Data-Driven Documents (d3js.org). It is a somewhat large but very mature library for visual representation and has a strong following in scientific applications and is a good investment of your time to learn.
