You might have an easier time upgrading from one version to the next.
So first check if you have some deprecation warning and fix them. Then
install django 1.4, check if you have deprecation warnings, fix them.
Check things are working as intended. Test really help at this point.
Once you are running on django 1.4 without deprecation warning or
regression, do the same with django 1.5 and so on. You might want to
follow the release note as you move along. Minor version release note
have a list of backwards incompatible change. See for exemple the
notes for django 1.4:
