Ultimately it would be down to the weekly contributors to pull in the info, if we make it an automated service then we could end up bloating the thread to the point where it feels like spam.
I think that the concept of a weekly thread is for users to list their thoughts of what they feel is interesting enough to be fed back into the community - and would be more successful than it being a single aggregation point for external services.
This also kepts the thread much more informal, and each contribution has a different feel to it, rather than it all being by the same writer. But as Russ said, it needs people to get involved.
So that being said, I'll start one this week, cross my fingers and see if it catches on! If anyone happens to know the most active day on the list, please feel free to let me know, else I'll just crawl the archives or something lol.

This to me is a key point. There are too many feeds, blogs, services, helpdesks and whatnot available to the user. The community seems quite fragmented to me; newcomers and experienced developers use different tools to communicate which obviously isn't the ideal way of doing things. Just take a look at the topics on convore.com and django-users and you'll see what I mean, not to mention #django (which is in dire need of at least a dozen more helping eyes and hands).
My rant aside, perhaps the djangoweek.ly service could e-mail the list once per week? Getting out of the django comfort zone and expanding into "just Python" territory would also be quite refreshing, so there's that to figure out. Where would the "just Python" info come from?
