Popen works on system but fails on Django

OSX 10.7.5, System Python 2.7.1, Django 1.5.1

In system Python shell:

from subprocess import Popen   Popen("open /Library/Application\ Support/blender.app", shell=True)

will open blender.

Django views.py Popen("open /Library/Application\ Support/blender.app", shell=True) will open blender, quit unexpectedly and report fatal python error.

I think that Django/Python 2.7 is conflicting with blender's Python 3.2. How would I fix this?
