change displayed name of users object

Is there a simple way to change the displayed name of the users object in the auth package?

I don't care about what it's called under the hood. I just want to change what the user sees.

I'd like to avoid changing the code directly in the Django library as that will make upgrades difficult.

I came across this article but it's quite old and I'm hoping there's a better way:
