Message error tells that you are trying to reach "index" url, which doesn't exists. Maybe you are calling "index" url instead of "login".

Any idea what this means?

The URL entry is as per the django tutorial as:

(r'^login/$', 'django.contrib.auth.views.login', {'template_name':
'registration/login.html'}),

And in my settings.py file I specify
LOGIN_URL = 'login/'
