Is there a way to prevent /static directory browsing?

Hey Guys, I am looking for a way to hide my media files from direct access. What is the common practice here?
If one would browse to http://www.example.com/static in one of my Django sites there would be
a list of all the files used therein. Is there a way to hide/prevent this url from having a directory tree?
